More information on Puertas de las Murallas
The Santa MarÃa gate was built in the 16th century. It is made of masonry stone and the opening is a low arch. Above this appears the town's coat-of-arms placed in 1879, a statue of the Virgin from 1638 and a sundial. The San Nikolas gate dates from 1541, and is just opposite another gate of the same name. A large bridge once crossed the moat, connecting it with the turret and inner gate. These gateways have only recently been renovated, and a wooden bridge was added in what is hoped is a replica of the original structure, long since destroyed.
