Due to the damage caused by Hurricane Wilma, the following description may no longer be accurate. Please consider this when making your travel plans. One week before February 24th, vendors line the streets selling flags in all sizes in preparation for upcoming Flag Day. The Mexican flag, created in 1821, has a central emblem referring to the Aztec legend that a city would be built wherever an eagle devouring a serpent was seen. (The city built turned into Mexico City.) The green in the flag symbolizes hope, the white purity and the red the blood of national heroes. On the actual day, there is a parade and special ceremony followed by a party in the Plaza Central.
