More information on Lilac Festival
The lilac, which blooms in late May to signal the arrival of summer, is the official flower of Sapporo. It is celebrated with a variety of attractions centered on Odori Park. The festival opens with a lilac-planting event for which visitors to the park are given seedlings to place in the ground. There follows a series of other events, including flower shows, concerts and sketching sessions. As with all festivals in Japan, food, drink and souvenir vendors set up stalls to ensure that the atmosphere remains festive for the duration.
