By some estimates the largest urban forest in the world, the Tijuca National Park covers a mountainous area in the center of sprawling Rio de Janiero, the lungs of this city and host to the famous mountaintop statue overlooking Rio, Christ the Redeemer. Reforestation and conservation aren’t just buzzwords today – in 1861 the Portuguese King Don Pedro II declared this area protected after it had been degraded through intensive sugar and coffee cultivation. In a forward-thinking project, Don Pedro had it replanted with 40,000 species of native Atlantic rainforest plants.
