More information on Iglesia de la Concepción
Inaugurated in 1655, this sober-looking Baroque church was once part of the Real Convento de la Concepción, a religious center founded by the first bishop of Mexico (Fray Juan de Zumárraga). It is also famous for being the first nunnery in the capital of New Spain. This church's appearance is particularly interesting due to the variety of architectural styles present. The body of the convent dates back to 1617 and was built according to Baroque guidelines. The tombs and dome were completed in 1732 in what seems to be a Churrigueresque-Baroque style, and the Neo-Classical tower was not finished until the 19th century. The interior, also Neo-Classical, is beautifully decorated in white and gold.
