This hotel, on a quiet side street not far from the van Gogh Museum, is owned by a gracious Indonesian family. The smallish guest rooms are outfitted with a minor-key classic elegance. Wood furnishings, bright and adjustable lighting, firm mattresses, and fine drapes all indicate that the proprietors have taken great care to create a comfort zone, even if modern-design awards are unlikely. Bathrooms, which have a combined tub/shower, are large in relation to room size; there's space enough for two at morning toilette, provided neither has sharp elbows. Some front rooms have balconies; rear-facing rooms overlook gardens. The entire hotel is nonsmoking, a distinction that, in this roll-your-own city, should cause you to breathe a clean-air sigh of relief. A small patio-garden out back is a pleasant place to relax in fine weather. Van de Kasteelen lies between tram stops, but isn't too far from them. As for rates, high-season ones might make you ponder; but those for the low season are a bargain. Facilities: Lounge; nonsmoking rooms Note: This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice.
