More information on Fortino di Porta Pispini
Early medieval Siena was not only home to painters and sculptors. The changing moods of Siena and other cities made professionals in the art of building defensive walls absolutely necessary. An example is the semi-circular fortification built by Baldassare Peruzzi in the early 16th Century. It is part of the city's defenses that include eight gates between Porta Romana (at the end of Via Roma), Porta Pispini (at the end of Via Pispini) and Porta Ovile (at the end of Via Vallerozzi). All were from the 14th Century with battlements supported by blind arches in Gothic style.
