More information on Pamiatnik Nikolaiu Pervomu (Monument to Nicholas I)

This monument on St Isaac's Square reflects the militaristic sobriety of Emperor Nicholas. Riding on a horse, dressed in his gala uniform, the emperor faces away from St Isaac's Cathedral and towards the Marinskii Palace. The monument is famous because the sculpture (six meters high) rests on just two feet of the horse; the only point of connection between the podium and the sculpture. The monument built in 1859 has four allegoric figures on the pedestal that symbolize Wisdom, Might, Justice and Faith.
