The world-famous Sir Robert Peel - Prime Minister 1834-35 and 1841-46 and founder of the modern police force - was born in Bury in 1788 and this is one of two major local monuments erected in his honour.It's well worth the climb up Holcombe Hill to the 128-feet tall grit stone monument, from where there are spectacular views across the surrounding countryside and into Manchester, Cheshire and North Wales. During the Second World War it was even used by the Home Guard as a look-out for German parachutists.
