The Washington National Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in the world. The cathedral is an official national monument, and has been voted one of the most beautiful buildings in the United States. After over a century of planning and construction, the cathedral was completed in 1990, and features a mix between classical gothic and contemporary designs. The cathedral has been used for major events, including state funerals, presidential prayer services and civil rights speeches. Multiple tours are available, and showcase elements ranging from the 57-acre landscaping and surrounding gardens to the subtle intricacies of the stained glass windows.

Metro: Tenleytown, with a 20-min. walk. Bus: Any N bus up Massachusetts Ave. from Dupont Circle or any 30-series bus along Wisconsin Ave. This is a stop on the Old Town Trolley Tour

Cathedral Mon-Fri 10am-5:30pm; Sat 10am-4pm; Sun 8am-6:30pm; May 1 to Labor Day, the nave level stays open Mon-Fri until 8pm. Gardens daily until dusk. Regular tours Mon-Sat 10-11:30am and 12:45-3:30pm; Sun 12:45-2:30pm. Services vary throughout the year, but you can count on a weekday Evensong service at 5:30pm, a weekday noon service, and an 11am service every Sun; call for other service times
