New Year's Eve Party at El Malecon

Each New Year's Eve, locals and tourists of all ages gather at the traditional New Year´s party celebrated at El Malecon, a famous oceanfront boulevard considered to be the "World´s Largest Discotheque" by the Guinness Book of World Records. Merengue music performed by various local groups creates the backdrop for the unanimous joyful environment of dancing, singing and drinking in the crowded waterfront street. There is a fireworks display at midnight, and the celebration continues until sunrise. Several parties are also celebrated at hotels facing El Malecon, where the contagious local enthusiasm can be evidenced as well. One word of caution: beware of pickpocket and those who have had far too much to drink.
