More information on Wekerle Estate
This now classic garden suburb is most definitely not on the tourist route, although it could be. The idea (back in 1908) was to build a complete and self contained suburban housing estate (for lucky civil servants). The plan was realized, not only with front and back gardens, but also with fine entrance gates, a ceremonial inner square, and best of all, wonderful architecture. The style is called Translyvanian, and features steeple-like wooden roofs and other fine touches (the work of Karoly Kos, who supervised the building and design of the region). If you want to stroll some interesting streets where real people live, give the Wekerle estate a try.
