More information on Stockport Air Raid Shelters
Stockport Air Raid Shelters consist of a labyrinth of underground passages, cut deep into the soft red sandstone underneath the Stockport town centre. They were constructed by Stockport's Air Raid Precautions Committee in 1938 as Britain was preparing for war with Germany, and were designed to equip thousands of people with basic amenities during a prolonged bombing campaign. Now they are open to the public who can take individual or guided tours with added authentic sounds, songs and reminiscences to help recreate the experience of the Blitz. Wander through reconstructions of the original living quarters highlighting the contributions of the wardens and volunteers who ran the shelters. Make sure you are there before 4p to enjoy at least an hour of this beautiful maze.
