One of Grand Cayman's most eccentric coral-jewelry designers operates a showroom from what was originally built as a sea-fronting garage on South Strand Road, in a mostly residential neighborhood about 4.8km (3 miles) south of George Town. Its owner is Carey Hurleston (Doctor Carey to his friends), a heavily tattooed, widely experienced biker who might drop an anecdote or two about his days with some of North America's more notorious motorcycle clubs. All the coral sold here comes from waters immediately off Grand Cayman. Hurleston removed the coral from deep waters some 2 decades ago, before the reef was protected, and his products are made from that long-ago supply. It's fashioned into earrings, pendants, and bracelets, with very few of the handcrafted items selling for more than CI$40 (US$50).
