More information on Christ Church

This church was built between 1720 and 1726. George Richard Pain redesigned the front in 1825 and was later involved in re-modelling the interior. Make sure to stroll down Christ Church Lane to view the side windows and D-shaped apse at the rear. Edmund Spenser, the English poet, is said to have wed Elisabeth Boyle in the Church that stood on this site in 1594. Having wooed Elisabeth with his beautiful Amoretti Sonnets, he commemorated their marriage in Epithalamion. The older church was first damaged by Oliver Cromwell's troops in 1649 before being destroyed during the siege of 1690, after which it had to be demolished.
