You can survive quite nicely without taxis if you stay here. The Victoria's as close as you can be to Centraal Station, where most of Amsterdam's trams begin and end their routes, and where you can board a train to other parts of Holland and to Schiphol Airport. Since 1890, this elegant hotel has been a turreted landmark at the head of the street called Damrak. It overlooks canal-boat piers and the stack of bikes parked outside the station. It can be noisy and tacky out on busy, neon-lit Damrak, but you won't notice that inside the hotel. Its original spacious rooms have been recently redecorated and refurnished, and the windows replaced with double-glazed panes. Rooms in the new block inevitably lack some of the atmosphere of those in the old. The proprietors' idea is to give you a five-star hotel at four-star rates -- at a great location. Enjoy dinner or a quick lunch in Seasons Garden restaurant, with its Scandinavian decor, or take cocktails at Tasman Bar or tea at Brasserie Vic's glassed-in terrace beside Damrak.
