More information on Church of Ilia the Prophet Obydennyi
Initially a wooden temple built around 1592 and named 'Obydennyi' (one day), because it was built within the day, as promised by a vow. The story goes that a young prince was caught in a fierce thunderstorm nearby where the church now stands. He made a vow that if he lived through it, he would build a wooden church in the name of Ilia the Prophet (the saint who is responsible for thunderstorms according to the Russian Orthodox tradition). He did as he vowed; and then later, during the reign of Peter the Great, a stone church was erected on the site. The church was one of the few that has never shut down, and a number of revered icons were transferred here for safekeeping.
