Established in 1937, the National Gallery of Art houses some of the most important works from medieval times to the modern era. The museum is one of the major collections of art in the world, holding 1,200 paintings. The European masters highlighted here include Rembrandt, Van Gogh and da Vinci, while contemporary artists on display include Matisse, Pollock and Warhol. Works from the different periods are split between two buildings, and a 6-acre sculpture garden to the west can also be enjoyed.
