More information on Umgeni River Bird Park
Rated as one of the top three of its kind in the world, this bird park is situated near the banks of the Umgeni River. More than 300 species from around the world are housed in large aviaries, three of which are walk-through, and each is planted with palms, cycads, and other tropical plants. The variety of colors and sounds is astounding, and somehow the lush environment makes up for the fact that most of these hapless creatures are caged. The educational "Free Flight" bird show, in which handlers introduce a variety of birds (including a parrot, blue crane, and Cape vulture) and demonstrate their flight patterns, is definitely worth catching.
