This unusual farm garden is the only surviving "ornamental farm" in Europe and it was nearly lost forever -- it had fallen into decay in the 1970s and 1980s, but was restored in the late 1990s. Products of the Romantic Movement, these hybrid farms were popular throughout Europe in the 18th century. Larchill is a marvelous example of art for art's sake, as all around the working farm are little things of beauty: a lake dotted with delightful Gothic follies; miles of wooded nature trails; meadows stocked with emus and llamas; a walled garden filled with goats, geese, and peacocks. There's even a resident ghost haunting a medieval tower. Kids will not be completely bored here, as there's an adventure trail with traditional games, a playground, a sand pit, and guinea pigs and rabbits to pet.
