This is really the heart and soul of the city, where everything happened and continues to happen. The magnificent architecture of the square, architecture that has been decorated and modified, but never altered in nature over the centuries, has grown from humble beginnings. The nine stone bands in the square commemorate the successful government dei Nove (Nine). Twice a year, the outer section of the square is covered with earth so the Palio Horse Race, a bareback horse race, can be run.
