Designed to suggest a Thai village, with a beautifully authentic wooden Thai pavilion serving as both a centerpiece and Thai/Asian restaurant, the Orchid is one of Eilat's most unusual hotels, especially if you can conceive of a Thai resort transported to the barren, rocky desertscape of the Negev (a fire destroyed the hotel's tropical landscaping, but new plantings are slowly growing in). The location is 1km (1/2 mile) south of the Coral Beach, on the inland side of the road leading along the coast to Taba. With the exception of the beautiful restaurant the rest of Orchid is faux Asian, but public areas are pleasant, surrounding a large, often busy pool. Farther uphill are lines of wooden A-frame guest units with a double room and bathroom on the ground floor, and a sleeping loft reached by ladder/steps. A golf cart shuttle carries guests up to their accommodations, which are decorated with non-Thai print curtains and bedspreads. The 36 rooms in the "Shangri-la" wing have recently been renovated and are a bit more expensive than standard rooms. Nighttime options include a piano bar, disco in high season, and entertainment for children and adults, usually in Hebrew. Off-season, the Orchid can have a tranquil charm, but during school vacations it's packed with Israeli families, which means lots of children.
