Pelagic bird watching is one of the cheaper excursions on the waters around Kaikoura, 115 miles from Christchurch. It is also one of the most rewarding. Taking a three-hour cruise around the Kaikoura peninsula, you will see up to 20 or more species of seabird, including petrels, shags, mollymawks, shearwaters and, of course, the Royal Albatross. There are plenty of opportunities for photographs along the way, and expert guidance is close at hand with experienced guide and ex-fisherman, Gary Melville. A list of regularly sighted birds is also provided to help with identification. Booking is available online.
