Surrounded by a splendid garden, with magnificent palm trees, this elegant 17th-century country house is home to the paintings of Jean-Honoré Fragonard. The celebrated Grasse-born painter stayed here while visiting the town between 1790 and 1791. Famous for his romantic paintings and portraits, Fragonard's artwork is characterized by fluid lines and graceful figures. Among the paintings are reproductions of The Progress of Love: four decorative panels charged with eroticism that were commissioned by Louis XV's mistress, the Countess of Barry. Also hanging in the stairwell is a remarkable trompe-l'œil, painted by the artist's son Alexandre-Évariste (who later became a talented neoclassical painter) at the age of 13.
