More information on Portland Art Museum
This is the oldest art museum in the Northwest, and in October 2005 a new wing that gave the museum lots more space for displaying its collection of modern and contemporary art. This collection begins with European Impressionist and moves right up to the present. Although the museum has respectable collections of European, Asian, and American art, the best reason to visit is to see the extensive collection of Native American art and artifacts. There's also a good collection of Northwest contemporary art that includes a fascinating two-story wall of "artifacts" by glass artist William Morris. The Portland Art Museum is frequently the Northwest stop for touring blockbuster exhibits. There's also a small sculpture court. October through April, on Wednesday nights from 5:30 to 7:30pm, the Museum After Hours program presents live music (admission is $8-$10 if you aren't a museum member). Between November 5, 2006, and March 4, 2007, there will be an exhibit of ancient Egyptian treasures. Note: This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice.
