More information on Ninnaji

Ninnaji, founded in 888, is the head temple of the Omuro branch of the Shingon sect, and an important pilgrimage site for its followers. They follow a scaled-down version of the 88-temple circuit on the island of Shikoku in the mountains north of the temple. The temple grounds themselves contain a five-story pagoda, an exhibition hall of ikebana, flower arranging, and a large hall dedicated to Shingon's founder, Kobo Daishi(774-835). In April the grounds are thronged by cherry blossom viewers and party goers who flock to admire the late-blooming trees.
