Dating from 1845 and built as a resting place for train travelers, this handsome five-story hotel is the grande dame of Galway. In the heart of the city, overlooking Eyre Square, its location couldn't be more central -- next to the bus and rail station and within walking distance of all the major sights. The spacious public areas have high ceilings, elaborate plasterwork, crystal chandeliers, and original Connemara marble fireplaces. The guest rooms have subtle color patterns of neutral beiges and creams, with modern furniture and designer fabrics. The public areas are a favorite meeting place for Galwegians and the hotel is always buzzing. Note: It's very central, so there can be quite a bit of street noise. If that bothers you, ask for a room on an upper floor.
