More information on Lunes de Aguas
In order to pinpoint the date of this fiesta, which is probably the most popular in the whole province, you have to do a bit of math and keep your eye on the calendar. It always takes place on the Monday after Easter Sunday, known as Lunes de Pascua (Easter Monday). The tradition goes back many years, when the men of Salamanca used to cross the River Tormes in decorated boats to pick up prostitutes, locally known as picos pardos ('brown beaks', literally). The celebration nowadays is much more 'wholesome' and consists of a meal in the country which includes the traditional hornazo, a pastie filled with sausage, cold meats and boiled egg. All the shops shut for the afternoon. Typical places to go include Aldehuela, Gargabete, Zurguen and the river-side park. Villages worth visiting on this day are Aldealengua, San Morales and Babilafuente.
