More information on Maori Pa Sites
There are numerous Maori Pa archaeological sites all over the Auckland region, often situated on the city's volcanic cones, where terracing for housing and food storage pits was cut into the hillside. Middens, and defensive ditches and banks are sometimes still visible, and occasionally stone field gardens, such as at Otuataua in Mangere. An Archaeological Trail brochure from the Visitor Centre in Cornwall Park benefits a self-guided tour of One Tree Hill. Other good sites include Mt Eden (Maungawhau), Mt Hobson (Remuera), Mt St. John (Epsom), Mangere Mountain, and Kauri Point (near Birkenhead).
