Börek is something that can be eaten at any time of the day. These pastry triangles come in many forms, either stuffed with minced meat or any one of a dozen different kinds of cheese for breakfast. Sweet Börek sprinkled with icing sugar with Ayran (a salted yoghurt drink) is popular for tea. Sulu börek is like sloppy lasagne filled with goat's cheese and is also a popular local snack. You eat at standing-only counters and most of the trade is takeaways and deliveries. There are photos of Börek fans Haile Selassie and Benazir Bhutto on the walls, although they actually ate at the branch inside the luxurious Topkapi Palace, and not at this humble little joint opposite Sirkeci train station!
