Real Traveler reviews for Cerro Santa Lucía

More information on Cerro Santa Lucía

Originally called Huelén - "damned" in Mapuche language- it was renamed in 1541 by conquistador Pedro de Valdivia, founder of Santiago. Its hillside started to be transformed in 1872, when plans to turn Santiago into a European style city began. This way, Santiago high society could stroll down the beautiful new gardens, squares and terraces. In years to come, the rapid growth of the city contributed to its decline. But in the 90s, restoration began and it is now back to its former glory with the added benefit of a lift to the summit and the Castillo Hidalgo as an events and exhibition centre for native art. Also, during summer, the area of the mirador (panoramic point) becomes a stage for theatre plays and concerts. Today, Santa Lucia Mount is again a perfect place for a family outing and a recommended spot for tourists, where all can enjoy lush gardens, a panoramic viewpoint, monuments and a taste of Santiago's history.
