More information on Independence Day Celebrations
Celebrate Chile's independence at one of the biggest parties of the year. This two-day celebration in the capital city features folk dancers performing the national dance of Chile as well as Huasos (Chilean cowboys) showing off in rodeos in the city center. The celebrations on September 18th honor Chile's first attempts toward independence in 1810, and culminate in a public address by Chile's president in the Plaza de la Constitución. The following day, September 19th, commemorates the day in 1846 when the country finally gained its soverignty from Spanish rule. Officially designated as the "Day of the Glory of the Armed Forces," this national holiday features a huge military parade through the city, followed by a huasa (traditional Chilean rodeo).
