One of the city's true grande dame hotels, the Shelbourne has been a Dublin landmark since 1824. It has long desperately needed a makeover, and in 2006, it got one. To Dubliners, the Shelbourne symbolizes history and politics, and nothing -- not even getting swallowed up by the Meridien Group -- can change that. The hotel has played a significant role in Irish history -- the Irish constitution was drafted here in 1922, in room no. 112 -- and it still attracts Irish politicians, especially to its bars and restaurants. Before the renovation, the bars, lobby, and tearooms were warmed by fireplaces and lighted by Waterford chandeliers. As this book went to press, the renovation was not yet complete, so we were unable to see what the transformation looked like. However, the owners have promised to retain its charm and they vowed that tea in the Shelbourne lobby would remain a local tradition.
