Situated on the edge of the mountain, some 4km from Innsbruck, the village of Aldrans is popular with holiday-makers, offering fine walking, climbing, swimming, and mountain-biking. Once a year, however, villagers turn back the clock to the days when the region was dependent upon agriculture. Good weather was essential to survival, and the annual May Day festival is a kind of prayer to the weather gods. The festival is still celebrated in Aldrans today. The Maypole is hoisted amid much rejoicing on the evening of 30th April and the festivities continue through to 1st May with traditional music and dancing around the Maypole.
