More information on Lutheran Church
The Lutheran Church in Strand Street was built in 1771, ostensibly as a kind of warehouse. This disguise was necessary, as any form of worship other than Dutch Reformed, was barely tolerated by the official order. Lutheran fortunes changed when Martin Melck from Memel, in Germany, arrived. Shortly after settling in the Cape, his hard work and integrity made him a wealthy and respected man. The governor at the time held him in high esteem and when Melck appealed to him for an official Lutheran church, he was granted the site in Strand Street. The Lutheran Church officially opened its doors in 1780 and is to date, the oldest, unaltered church building in South Africa.
