More information on Higashi Honganji

Founded by shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa in 1602 as a rival to break the power of nearby Nishi Honganji, the Higashi Honganji temple covers a vast space close to Kyoto Station. Complete with massive gates, monumental buildings and a sizable colony of pigeons to rival Trafalgar Square in London, it is a 'must-see' location on every visitor's itinerary. Look for the black rope made from female devotees' hair used in the reconstruction of the buildings in the 19th century. Admission is free.
