This walled city, founded in 1203 by king Alfonso VIII, has one of the most important and well-preserved historical quarters in Gipuzkoa. You can visit the remains of the walls, gates, and an urban structure that are all practically original. There are old palaces, wooden houses, and fishermen's cottages, which all make for a very interesting atmosphere. Make sure to visit the Plaza de Armas (Armas Square), where the "parador" (state-run hotel) is situated. Also, don't miss the parish church and Plaza de Gipuzkoa (Gipuzkoa Square) which, although both of recent construction, blend in well with the old-time feel.
