This massive, neoclassical cathedral on Castle Hill is Esztergom's most popular attraction and one of Hungary's most impressive buildings. It was built in the 19th century to replace the cathedral that was ruined during the Turkish occupation. The intricately carved red-marble, Renaissance-style Bakócz Chapel inside the cathedral (to the left) dates from the early 16th century. The chapel survived the Turkish destruction of the former cathedral; when the present structure was being built, the chapel was dismantled (into 1,600 numbered pieces) to be reincorporated into the new cathedral. The cathedral Treasury (Kincstár) contains a stunning array of ecclesiastical jewels and gold works. Since Cardinal Mindszenty's body was moved to the crypt in 1991 (he died in exile in 1975), this place has become a pilgrimage site for Hungarians, who come to see the final resting place of this uncompromisingly anti-Communist cleric who spent a good portion of the Cold War living inside the American embassy in Budapest. The cupola has, as far as church towers go, one of the scarier and more cramped ascents, but children seem to love the climb and the views from the top.If you happen to be in town during the first week of August, don't miss out on one of the classical guitar concerts performed in the cathedral. The acoustics are sublime. The concerts are part of Esztergom's annual International Guitar Festival.Ascending the cramped tower of Esztergom Cathedral can be a somewhat creepy experience; but if you do venture up, you'll be rewarded with unparalleled views of Esztergom and the surrounding Hungarian and Slovak countryside.
