More information on Isaac's Synagogue

This tall, imposing building was built in the 1640s when it was known as the most beautiful of Kazimierz's synagogues. Its interior was once entirely covered by marvellous baroque frescoes, featuring impressive scroll and ivy work as well as the words of the holy Torah. During World War II, the building was looted and desecrated, but somehow escaped total destruction. After the war, unsucessful attempts were made to renovate the building. It has alternately stood empty or been used as a warehouse. It has only recently been totally renovated and only snippets of its former beauty remain. There is also a small exhibition of photographs from various Polish ghettos during WWII as well as an opportunity to watch a short film about the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.
