Soccer fans in Santiago have their pick of teams. Of the 16 clubs in the first division league, nearly half hail from the capital city. The soccer tradition in Chile goes back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, when venerable teams like Colo Colo, Santiago Morning and Santiago Wanderers were founded. The league has battled financial woes in recent years, calling on fans and corporate sponsors for financial support. But, enthusiasm for the sport remains undimmed, and the best way to see the fun is to join loyal fans for matches between rival teams.
