Description

Originally named Emilius, (193 BCE), this was the first stone bridge: it was suitable for the passage of heavily laden carts that could not cross the Sublicius bridge, which was made of timber. Its slanting position meant that it was prone to water damage, and half the bridge was destroyed by a violent flood in the late 16th century. This is why it is called Ponte Rotto (broken bridge). Today it can best be seen from the Palatino Bridge. view all details
