Though predominantly French-speaking, this district of over 100,000 residents and 8.1 square kilometres of space also boasts a large multi-ethnic population. Once fairly run down, it is now one of the most desired addresses in Canada, thanks to a vibrant commerce, plenty of green spaces, bike paths, art galleries, restaurants galore and a community spirit that spills out naturally into the streets. Though its cheap-and-funky days are behind it, for many people this is still the quintessential Montreal neighborhood.
