King John granted a fair here in 1211 in addition to one on neighboring Stourbridge Common. For centuries the latter was more famous, with merchants coming from all over Europe, until its terminal decline in the early 20th century. Midsummer Fair, however, lives on. The Mayor of Cambridge proclaims it open and then throws pennies to the assembled children. A footpath east leads past the Museum of Technology and out of the city towards Ely.
