More information on Austin Museum of Art at Laguna Gloria

Perched on 12 1/2 palm- and pecan-shaded acres overlooking Lake Austin -- believed by some to be part of a claim staked out for his retirement by Stephen F. Austin, who didn't live to enjoy the view -- this lovely Mediterranean-style villa was built in 1916 by Austin newspaper publisher Hal Sevier and his wife, Clara Driscoll, best known for her successful crusade to save the Alamo from commercial development. The mansion was long used to host major traveling art shows, but, since it reopened in late 2003 following a $3.5-million renovation, the focus instead is on the historic aspects of the home and grounds. The lower-profile art exhibits held here no longer distract from the architecture and landscaping, which speak for themselves. Tip: If the weather's nice, bring along a picnic lunch to enjoy by the lake. It's one of the prettiest spots in the city and, during the week, one of the most peaceful.
