Tomb Sweeping Day, or Qing Ming Jie, is a Chinese festival that is celebrated a fortnight after the vernal equinox according to the solar calendar. It marks the rebirth of nature and pays homage to the dead; as such, the Chinese visit graves, cleaning and sweeping away any dust and weeds from the site, and leave offerings of food and 'spirit' money near the tombs. At home, traditional dishes are cooked up, and kites are also flown, most of which are in the shapes of flowers or animals, in keeping with the theme of a rebirth of nature.
