More information on Max-Liebermann-Haus
Until his death in 1935, impressionist painter Max Liebermann lived on Pariser Platz right next to the Brandenburg Gate. His impressive neo-classical residence was destroyed during the War and a new building, designed by Josef Paul Kleihues, was erected on the same spot in 1996. Denounced by critics as a poor copy of the original, Max-Liebermann-Haus now plays host to rotating art exhibitions organised by the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate Foundation), a privately run art foundation funded by a Berlin bank. Its central location and impressive collection serve to illustrate the importance of private foundations for preserving and promoting the arts.
