More information on Chucalissa Archaeological Museum
The Chucalissa Archaeological Museum is built on the site of a Mississippian-period (A.D. 900-1600) Native American village. Dioramas and displays of artifacts discovered in the area provide a cultural history of Mississippi River Valley Native Americans. These people reached their highest level of cultural development during the Mississippian period, when large villages were constructed on bluffs above the Mississippi. This culture was characterized by sun worship, mound building, and a distinctive artistic style that can be seen in many of the artifacts displayed here. The reconstructed village includes several family dwellings, a shaman's hut, and a chief's temple atop a mound in the center of the village compound. The chance to walk through a real archaeologist's trench and to explore a Native American village thrills most children. Allow 1 to 2 hours.
